How To Get Your Website To Rank For Position 0

Keelie Reason

September 4, 2026

Position 0 is arguably the most coveted and highly sought-after marketing achievement on the internet. This is the Google result that gets your business’s website at the very top of the page. As a business owner, you should be doing everything that you can to rank higher on Google and get your website to this coveted position 0. Our team here at R5 Management is here to help you accomplish that goal through effective search engine optimization.

Key Takeaways

The top of Google looks different than it did a few years ago. Featured snippets still exist, but AI Overviews now take up some of the most valuable space at the top of many search results.

  • AI Overviews can summarize information from several sources directly in search
  • There is no special trick or markup that guarantees inclusion
  • Strong SEO fundamentals still matter for AI visibility
  • Clear, original answers give Google better information to work with
  • Updating useful older content can help keep it relevant as search changes

The goal is no longer just getting one blue link into “Position 0.” It is making your website useful enough to be considered wherever Google is building the answer.

Position 0 Looks Different Today

When this post was originally written, “Position 0” usually meant earning a featured snippet above the traditional organic results. That is still possible, but search has changed. Google now frequently uses AI Overviews at the top of results when it believes an AI-generated summary can help someone understand a topic more quickly.

An AI Overview can pull together information and links from multiple websites rather than displaying one short answer from a single page. That changes the opportunity. Instead of only writing a 40- or 50-word paragraph in hopes that Google selects it for a featured snippet, businesses now need content that is clear enough, useful enough, and trustworthy enough to support a larger AI-generated answer.

What It Takes to Show Up in AI Overviews

There is not a separate checklist that guarantees a spot in an AI Overview. Google says pages appearing as supporting links still need to be indexed and eligible to appear normally in Search. The same SEO basics continue to apply.

That means writing useful original content, answering questions clearly, making important information available as text, using internal links so related pages are easy to discover, and keeping the website technically healthy. For local businesses, accurate Google Business Profile information and clear service and location content still matter too.

It is also worth thinking beyond one exact keyword. AI-powered searches can be more conversational and specific. A strong page may answer the main question, explain related concepts, provide examples, and address natural follow-up questions all in one place. That gives Google more useful context without stuffing the page with slightly different versions of the same keyword.

The focus should still be on helping the person searching. If a page offers something original, clearly explains the subject, and gives readers a reason to trust the information, it is also creating the kind of content Google says can perform across both traditional and AI-powered search.

Featured Snippets

A featured snippet is displayed in the search results and has an answer to the user’s question. In order to get a snippet feature, you need to write a concise enough answer to the question and hit the main highlights. Generally, a featured snippet is 40-50 words or roughly 300 characters.

Snippets will appear in position 0, along with a dropdown menu of other questions that people often ask.

Featured snippets can still appear prominently in Google results, but they are no longer the only format competing for that top-of-page space. AI Overviews now appear for many searches and may include information and links from several different sources.

Create FAQ Style Questions in Your Content

One of the most important things to remember when it comes to SEO is that the average search engine user is asking Google questions. You can use keyword databases to help you find commonly asked questions relating to the keyword that you are talking about in your content. You should always aim to answer 4-5 of these questions with short answers. This will boost your chances of appearing in Google search results. Understanding search intent is key to answering these questions effectively and providing real value to your target audience.

Target Multiple Long-Tail Keywords

It’s great to get your website at that coveted position 0 for one of your target keywords. What’s even better than that? Having the same content pop up at position 0 for multiple different keywords. Long-tail keyword phrases can help your website rank for more than one keyword at a time.

If you see that one of your articles is gaining organic traffic, you should add related search phrases to it. This will help boost the page on other searches. The more and more your website pops up, the more likely people are to click on it.

Provide Helpful Information

Perhaps the most important part is to provide actual useful information in your content. This is the best way to keep people coming back to your post. If you can answer someone’s question, Google will pick up that you are a reliable source. Once Google deems you reliable, you are more and more likely to get higher results. Google’s algorithm prioritizes helpful content that aligns with search intent, so making sure your content truly answers users’ questions is a direct ranking factor.

Upgrade Any Blogs That Are Getting Traffic

If you notice that a blog on your site is getting traffic, then it’s a good candidate for an upgrade. You’re basically adding fuel to the fire with this type of strategy. Giving Google more of what it wants will usually produce good results for you.

This will require you to do some additional keyword research. See what the post is ranking for and add in related search terms. Just plug that main keyword into Google and see what other phrases come up. Add those phrases to your existing content.

The best thing you can do to upgrade your content is to add more sections to the post. One of the ways we do this is by adding a section for commonly asked questions. We use questions we’ve found on Answer the Public and write answers to about 4 to 5 searched phrases. This helps to create content that better aligns with search intent and boosts your Google ranking.
