Empowering Productivity

How Creating a Powerlist Can Increase Productivity With Brianne Lombardo

Austin Reason

Do you have a to-do list that’s a mile long? It’s easy to become overwhelmed and not know where to start. What ends up happening, is you get very little done on your list if anything at all. This causes you to get to the end of the day feeling unaccomplished and frustrated. In today’s episode, we will talk with our guest Brianne Lombardo about the psychology behind a power list and how to put one in place every day.

What is a Power List?

A power list is a small number of things that you are committing to do on any given day. They are non-negotiable and are the things that you decide need to be done that day no matter what. They don’t necessarily need to be work related, and should be there to focus your mind.

Why Does a Power List Help You Get More Done?

You can use psychology to trick your brain. Most things you do are driven by the necessity to do it, such as finding food, water, or shelter, or because of the reward you will get from doing it. When you complete a task your mind will release a dopamine to reward you. By do these rewarding tasks your body will be more encouraged to do work for the rest of the day.

What Should Go on This List?

There are two main approaches to decide what to put on the list. You can choose to put on things that you can make a habit out of. Creating this habit that you do at the start of every day can help prepare your mind for the rest of the day’s work. The second approach is to do the things that you know you avoid. Completed these tasks so early in the morning that you like putting off means that you won’t have to worry about rushing to get them done as the day comes to a close.

Tips to Implement Using a Power List

The first step is to create a brain dump. If you don’t know how to make a brain dump then you will want to start by getting a piece of paper. On the piece of paper write down every task you have to do that comes to mind. Use this brain dump to find things to put on your powerlist. You also should write down the list and put in some visually obvious spot so that your never forgetting about it.

What Keeps You From Being Productive?

A big thing that she finds keeps many people from being productive is trying to create habits and routines that don’t mesh well with who they are as a person. For example trying to follow someone else’s morning routine that has been pretty much custom made for them over years of trial and error. This other person is not the same as you though and trying to follow a routine that works for them could be devastating to your productivity. Like for example some people can be up and active and ready to start the day at 5:00 AM. Other people though, no matter how hard they tried could not be working at maximum capacity that early in the morning.
